Task 1

Media studies by Emma Solms

Task 1

In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

Choose six stills from your video, two panels from your digipak cover and one of yout promotional posters (you probably only have one of these anyway)

For each image, explain how it illustrates your choices in using or challenging the existing forms and conventions of music marketing. You should illustrate each discussion with images from existing music products.

((Recreating a time … shots who show the set ex. The camera und boy.. 60s style ))

Some basic conventions:

 ‘Rhythmic’ montage, fragmented style
 Intercutting
 Experimental use of camera/editing
 Visually stylish – ‘artistic’ mise-en-scene
 Fast pace
 Conspicuous lighting and cinematography
 Often break the rules of continuity editing

- Direct address by performers
- Significant shots and band playing instruments/singing
- Significant shots and bands attractiveness
- Significant shots of bands key USPs
- Back lighting
- Signifant shots and promos key concept

Task 1 Emma Solms

In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The song in our pop video is called ‘For your Love’. The video is about a 60’s band named ‘Jack Thomson and the quartet’. The band consists of five people the lead singer is called ‘Jack Thomson’. While the band is playing their song you can see in jump cuts a modern girl coming in.
She and the other girls make everything modern. Dress up the band members give them different modern instruments. Even the stage is changing.
It turns from the colour black and white into colourful.

The picture is unfortunately not available at the moment but I will add it.

Picture: Beginning shot of the four Girls who are dancing and the presenter.

The Presenter shows that it is a Television show which represents popularity of the band. Also that four girls smiling and dancing behind him shows that the band is famous this makes the audience want to see it. This gives the band a star status.
The Voice of the presenter is diegetic and what he’s saying and the clothes shows already that they are in the 60’s. For example: ‘Hey swingers’.
We became this idea while watching in you-tube old 60’s television shows.
The presenter opens the door into the world of the band.

The Band (‘Jack Thomson and the quartet’)

The Camera moved from the presenter to the band and they directly started singing. This invites the audience into the world. We wanted the audience to get interested who the band is. But we still don’t have a close up of the lead.
The fact that they are performing in a TV show, shows their success. The shot is simple because in the 60’s they didn’t have difficult shots. And we wanted everything to look 60’s.

For Example this picture:
This picture shows a very 60’s shot. The band is playing on their instruments.
It also shows the realism of the band and makes the audience to believe it.

To show more of the 60’s television show we had a huge 60’s camera which we also showed in one shot with a camera man.
Picture: (will add it)
We used this shot because it represents a different world and year. This also attracts the audience.
Shot with the band and modern girl.
This is a shot where the modern girl comes into the word of the band. She is colourful while the band is still black and white
